Mountain Grown, Hidden in Mendocino.

The Russian River is perhaps one of the more famous watersheds for growing Pinot Noir in Northern California. At it’s western headwaters lies the Pacific coast range and the mountainous Eagle Peak, Mendocino County AVA. Elevation creates a climate with high diurnal temperature swings, while hillside soils are more shallow than the valleys below.

The Fetzers purchased a 1200 acre ranch here is the early 1990’s, and with a vision for Pinot Noir, they planted vines at two unique sites on the property. The “Lower” vineyard by the river boosts soils of weathered sedimentary rock and clay. The “Upper” vineyard at the top of the mountain is dry farmed in red weathered sandstone soils. Also planted here is a small block of Chardonnay.
